🌱 Mildew Causes ‘Unmarketable’ Yuma Lettuce + AZ House Budget

Welcome back Yuma! Here’s everything you need to know to get this Wednesday started off right.

First, today’s weather:

Warm with plenty of sun. High: 88 Low: 60.

Here are the top three stories in Yuma today:

  1. A recent trial tested how three different varieties of lettuce grown in Yuma can withstand downy mildew. The disease causes discoloration creating unmarketable lettuce that is harmless to eat but turns away potential buyers. Downy mildew thrives in perfect weather conditions by spreading through particles in the air. (KYMA)
  2. The House and Senate adopted a $1.5 trillion federal spending bill last week that drew sharply contrasting reactions from northern Arizona’s two representatives in Congress, Rep. Tom O’Halleran and Rep. Paul Gosar, both Republicans. The bill came to the floor after the Democratic leadership agreed to strip out some $13.6 billion in additional spending to cope with the pandemic. The many projects of the funding include improving and extending I-10 and I-11, a drought contingency plan, and the Marine Corps Air Station at Yuma. (Payson Roundup)
  3. On Tuesday morning, seven puppies were found in the desert and were taken to the Humane Society of Yuma for proper care. A resident discovered the puppies scattered and one was still in a cardboard box. Fortunately, they all appeared to be healthy. The Humane Society of Yuma is asking the public for information on the puppies, including details that would lead to the suspect. (KYMA)
