15-year-old shot and killed in Tucson; police open investigation
The Tucson Police Department has opened a homicide investigation following the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Carlos Cadena on Saturday near the Rillito Wash area in Tucson, police said.
Deputies from the police department were working off-duty at a Walmart located in the 400 block of E. Wetmore Road on Jan. 28 when they heard gunshots coming from behind the businesses in the area, police said.
The officers then responded to the scene and found a teenager, later identified as 15-year-old Carlos Cadena, suffering from gunshot wounds along the bike path in the Rillito Wash area behind the businesses, according to police.
Cadena was taken to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, police said.
Detectives later learned a fight had broken out between a group of people behind the businesses. The group included both adults and teenagers. The fight escalated, resulting in gunfire, according to homicide unit detectives.
An investigation revealed several witnesses fled from the shooting area before police arrived.
The police department said details are very limited at this time. Detectives are actively working to identify a suspect and determine a motive.
