At its June 22nd meeting, the Flagstaff Unified School District Board was presented with the results of a series of standardized tests conducted in the district over the past school year, and the district has begun analyzing and responding to this information.
FUSD saw a decline in multiple categories in the 2020/21 school year, reflecting patterns across the state. In her presentation of the report, Mary K. Walton, assistant director of curriculum and instruction at FUSD, attributed this decline to the changes in teaching FUSD had to make in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as more general challenges faced the students were exposed due to the same faced.
“The most important thing,” said Walton, “is that we grew our students from the beginning … to the end of the year based on our internal evaluations … When you take the standardized test [results]You see we fit in with the same valleys and mountains that the state also follows.
“Regardless, we have a gulf between our county and the state, and we’ve had it for a while … We need to work on it and see that we can close that gap along with the learning loss gap. So there’s a lot of work to do.”
Robert Hagstrom, director of research, evaluation and data at FUSD, prepared the report. He emphasized that the development of FUSD in the 2020/2021 school year reflects many districts in the United States
