A Phoenix area man accused of kidnapping his young son has died

PHOENIX (AP) – A Phoenix area man accused of kidnapping his young son in a custody battle that resulted in the death of the child’s mother has died as a result of an attempted suicide, authorities said Monday.

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office said 30-year-old Eric Maes died last Friday.

Prosecutors said Maes was “medically disabled” after attempting suicide in prison on February 13.

Maes’ family has asked prosecutors to dismiss first degree murder and kidnapping allegations against him so that they can make a medical decision on his behalf. This was approved by a judge on the county Supreme Court.

Arrested after kidnapping ten-month-old Abel Maes in Peoria on February 9, Maes drove off in the van owned by the child’s mother, Brittanie Martie.

According to arrest documents, Maes told police that he deliberately hit Martie after she jumped from the moving vehicle

Martie, 30, died in a hospital.

The baby was brought to safety on the doorstep of a residence the next morning, and Maes was arrested in Phoenix later that day.
