The Arizona Department of Transportation is starting a project to replace the Interstate 40 bridges over Business 40 that connect the Interstate to Historic Route 66 in West Flagstaff.
Located approximately 3 miles west of the intersection with Interstate 17, the project will completely replace the east and west bridges on I-40. This will require closing the eastbound access and exits as well as the crossing under the bridges, starting on Monday, March 15th, and continuing through October. Traffic will be diverted to Flagstaff Ranch Road to join I-40.
“This project continues our work to replace and rehabilitate I-40 bridges in the Flagstaff area,” said Audra Merrick, district engineer for the Northcentral District. “By doing this we can extend the life of these bridges and keep trade going along this important corridor.”
At least one lane in each direction will be maintained throughout the construction. The project is expected to be completed in autumn 2022.
In recent years, ADOT has replaced or refurbished a number of I-40 bridges in the Flagstaff area, including the I-40 bridges over Beulah Boulevard and I-17 and the Fourth Street bridge in East Flagstaff. Work is underway to replace the Rio de Flag bridge on Business 40 in Flagstaff.
ADOT has also replaced the Bellemont Bridges on I-40 and Hughes Avenue, formerly Transwestern Road, west of Flagstaff, and the bridges on I-40 on Meteor City Road, east of Flagstaff.
