News 11’s Adonis Albright speaks to a neighbor who says the flames came too close to offer comfort

YUMA, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – A massive fire broke out on a house construction site in Yuma in the Araby Crossing subdivision on the E32nd lane on Wednesday evening. Three houses under construction had only been sold in the past few months and were completely on fire while another property was damaged.

Several agencies, including the Yuma Fire Department (YFD), the Yuma Police Department (YPD), and the MCAS Yuma Fire Department, responded to the fire after it broke out shortly after 10 p.m.

“My son sat next to us and said, ‘It’s so light outside, what’s going on? There are lights. ‘ He got up and went to the kitchen window and said, “YOU’RE A FIRE!” Said Tina Gonzalez, a neighbor who lives only one block away from the source of the fire.

Gonzalez and her family stood in their back yard in awe of the flames that shot into the sky and threatened nearby homes.

“We thought, okay, a campfire, someone grilling or something? Then we ran out and everything was on fire. The fire came here, the ashes flew around. We immediately jumped into survival mode. “

According to the YFD, several point fires broke out in the area, setting several dumpsters on fire and threatening a nearby RV park. Several nearby dumpsters and a car were also badly damaged by the flames. Despite the strong wind speeds, the first aiders were able to extinguish the flames in less than an hour.

News 11 spoke to a construction worker behind the camera who was examining the damage left behind. The worker says he has been working on the houses for the past few months.

News 11 was also able to confirm with the property developer, Elliott Homes, that there was no electricity on the property believed to have started the fire. At this point it is too early to tell if arson was possible.

The Yuma Fire Department and Yuma Police Department continue to actively investigate the cause of the fire. Anyone with information is asked to call 78-crime for an anonymous reporting.
