On that day in 1882, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and Party left Tombstone, never to return.
On that day in 1890, General George Crook died.
On that day in 1895, Navajo County was formed out of Apache County.
On that day in 1901, the Arizona Rangers were formed on behalf of Governor Nathan O. Murphy.
Monday March 22nd
On this day in 1875, the Silver King Mine in the Pinal Mountains was discovered. The initial ore withdrawn from the mine was estimated at $ 4,300 per tonne.
On that day in 1906, a Board of Trustees meeting dealt with the “inappropriate conduct” of six teachers at Tucson Public Schools. The teachers had a picnic in Sabino Canyon on Sunday, during which they “drank beer and wine and smoked cigarettes”.
On that day in 1907, the Territorial Legislature moved the Territorial Prison from Yuma to Florence.
Tuesday March 23rd
On that day in 1876, the first Mormon settlers reached Sunset Crossing on the Little Colorado River, where they established four settlements. The four companies, which included 50 men and their families, left Salt Lake City on February 3, 1876.
On that day in 1877, John D. Lee, who founded and operated Lee’s Ferry across the Colorado River in 1872, was executed for his participation in the Mountain Meadows massacre. He was sitting on his coffin and was shot by a firing squad at the site of the massacre.
That day in 1904, FW Volz awarded the Arizona Board of Directors of the World’s Fair 5,000 pounds (2,269 kilograms) of the Canyon Diablo meteor for display in St. Louis.
On this day in 2003, Army soldier Lori Piestewa, who was born in Tuba City and belongs to the Hopi tribe, dies in Iraq when her convoy is ambushed. Piestewa was the first female soldier to die during the invasion of Iraq.
Wednesday March 24th
On that day in 1856, the Sonora Exploring and Mining Company was founded in Cincinnati to develop silver mines in southern Arizona. The Heintzelman mine near Arivaca was the company’s first development.
That day in 1902, Samuel Friedman, owner of the Grand Central Hotel in Benson and several mining areas in the Dragoon Mountains, died.
Thursday March 25th
On that day in 1901, gold prospectors discovered gold 6.4 kilometers from Wickenburg, triggering an onslaught of miners on the Hassayampa River.
On that day in 1902, The Arizona Daily Star reported that a surge of oil had been struck on land tied to the Standard Oil Company near Kelvin, Pinal County.
On that day in 1906, Arizona Governor Joseph Henry Kibbey predicted that livestock would have given way to ostrich rearing in Arizona entirely within five years.
Friday March 26th
On that day in 1902, The Clifton Copper Era reported the need for direct contact between Blue River Country and Clifton. Although the distance between the two was 64 kilometers, letters traveled a circular route of more than 1,609 kilometers that took about two weeks.
On that day in 1909, Thomas Gardner, one of the earliest pioneers in what is now Santa Cruz County, died. A canyon in the Santa Rita Mountains is named after him.
Saturday March 27th
On that day in 1883, James Addison Reavis filed a lawsuit with the Peralta Grant, which allegedly covered 48,562 square kilometers of the richest country, cities and mines in Arizona. The history of the grant later turned out to be fraudulent.
On that day in 1906, The Arizona Daily Star announced that it would provide daily weather forecasts from Consolidated Telephone, Telegraph and Electric Co.
On that day in 1906, it was announced that an increase in the price of beer to 10 cents a glass due to increased licensing costs for spirits in Pima County would take effect on March 31st.
