As the Yuma Regional Medical Center is considering a joint venture with LifePoint owned by Apollo, UNITE HERE launches the Watchdog website

BALTIMORE–(BUSINESS WIRE) – UNITE HERE today launched a new website,, to provide residents of Yuma, AZ with information about LifePoint Health, a for-profit hospital chain owned by private equity giant Apollo Global Management.

Recently, the Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC) announced that it is considering forming a joint venture with LifePoint, owned by Apollo, which could result in for-profit LifePoint becoming the majority owner of the hospital.

“Members of the Yuma community deserve to know the facts about LifePoint and Apollo. We hope this site will be a resource as they consider whether for-profit private equity ownership is the right thing for their hospital, ”said Michael Hachey, research analyst at UNITE HERE.

The website provides links to press coverage of LifePoint’s track record in other facilities, including reports of the health service cuts in LifePoint’s Wyoming hospitals and protests by health care workers against LifePoint’s workforce in Idaho and Washington.

The website also links to information on the wider implications of private equity ownership in the healthcare industry. The aggressive financial practices used by private equity firms to generate short-term profits could conflict with the interests of patients and communities. A recent study of private equity ownership in nursing homes found that private equity ownership increased Medicare patient short-term mortality by 10%. The study also found increased costs to taxpayers, a decrease in nursing staff, and increased spending on monitoring fees, interest, and lease payments.

UNITE HERE is a labor organization representing hospitality workers in the United States and Canada.
