Assistance League of Yuma: “It Takes a Village”

Local nonprofits have been hard hit during the pandemic and are in dire need of public help

YUMA, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – Yuma’s Assistance League is one link in a long chain that aims to improve the lives of those around you. The nonprofit is made up of volunteers and provides scholarships to students seeking programs in higher education, nutrition, health care, and literacy programs.

But what they know most is Operation School Bell. The program offers impoverished children new clothes.

Across the country, more than 22,000 volunteers work together to help those in need. More than 300,000 children receive help every year.

We asked a question to the current president of Yuma’s Assistance League, Julie Crede, and asked, “Why?” To which her answer was simple: “To see the children smile.”

Unfortunately, the Assistance League shared the same fate as thousands of thousands of nonprofits. The pandemic sparked a tidal wave of fear. See, the Assistance League makes money through their thrift stores.

Fear of contracting the deadly virus deterred people from donating, discouraging customers from buying, and keeping volunteers away.

However, the need has not gone away, it has continued to grow and your help is needed. On Saturday, April 24th, 2021, the Assistance League is holding a mega sale from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The items will be displayed in the Operation School Bell parking lot and the thrift store will also be open.
