Bay Area Reporter :: 50 years in 50 weeks: 1987, a page turner

Thanks to an excess of canvassing, the October 29, 1987 edition of the BAR was expanded to 68 pages. In addition to political news, the longer arts section focused on the boom in literary topics and reviews on “gay and lesbian” topics, from the history of lesbian theater to works by James Broughton and a debut novel by Christopher Bram.

Coincidentally, on a nearby page there is a biography of the gay film director James Whale, whose life would serve as the ripe fodder for a later Bram novel, Father von Frankenstein.

Also of historical importance is a fascinating aspect of the work of Bill Walker, whose collections for the then San Francisco Bay Area Lesbian and Gay Historical Society (later renamed) resulted in the preservation of the subject discussed here.

Yes, so much history stays on pages, printed and digital.
