“We just keep getting better,” said loyal San Diego midfielder Jack Blake after helping his squad keep their home winning streak alive and leading the Pacific Division’s first-placed Phoenix Rising in front of the first full crowd since March 7th To beat 2020.
The Englishman scored two goals in the 2-1 Loyal win over the Arizona team on the night known as “619 Night” to celebrate the club’s second birthday on the day coinciding with the San Diego area code.
The victory in the Torero Stadium leaves the Loyal undefeated in the last five games.
The night coincided with SD Loyal, who added more points to the overall standings with Blake’s goals shot outside the 18-yard space. Blake scored in the 36th minute to open the goal and delighted 5,800 fans in the stadium for USD.
Blake’s first goal came from the top of the box and he did it in a similar fashion across the field in the 57th game to take it 2-0. It was his third goal of the season against Phoenix. He also found the net in the 2-2 draw at Phoenix on June 5, also outside the box.
“This is so special,” said Blake. “The lads and I have been looking forward to this game for so long, to be fully occupied and to hear the fans behind us and to have this goal in front of us was so special.”
It took a pass from Jack Maher to Blake and another pass from Charlie Adams to Blake to create the points in Game of the Week 10.
Loyal manager Landon Donovan said, “Football is a fun game. We were much better in Phoenix and we probably deserved to win the game. “
“After everything that happened tonight, one point would probably have been fair,” he said. “We thank the football gods. They look down on you. “

Donovan continued: “We are proud of our boys. It was a different kind of accomplishment. It doesn’t look like us not to have a ball and to be pinned to our end. ”
Phoenix Rising moved up and eventually found the net when Arturo Gonzalez scored in the 66th minute as Donovan was out to defend his side to hold onto his second straight win.
Blake said, “It’s all about character and digging in. We can learn from our mistakes.
“We gave up two too late [goals] in Phoenix, but we keep getting better. That’s all we can do.
The schedule killed us a bit with the first seven out of eight away, but it’s great to score points at home and make this place a fortress like we have so far. ”
The Loyal will next face Las Vegas Lights FC on June 25th at Cashman Field in Nevada.
The Loyal is 3-4-2 with 11 points and Phoenix Rising is 5-2-1 with 16 points.
