Carol Danvers is fresh back in 2052 as she and a new generation of heroes battled an impossible threat. Unfortunately, none of this would have worked without Carol’s boyfriend James Rhodes’ future daughter … who he had without Carol. The heroine of the title has separated from Rhodes and is now wallowing in poor conditions and her own thoughts. This, of course, has worried many of her friends that Carol will turn to the worst of comfort, alcoholism.
Kelly Thompson’s script delivers humor, action, and surprises, and weaves deep characterization into some great twists. Then the art of David Lopez, Triona Farrell, and Clayton Cowles delivers every expression, every broken window (such a great shot), every punch, every explosion, and every meaningful look with weight and meaning. Bringing all of this together is not easy, which is why it is remarkable to see it so effectively.
This is a refreshing and wonderful look at the real life of a powerful person struggling with relatable problems. EVALUATION: BUY.
Captain Marvel # 27
By Kelly Thompson, David Lopez
SWIPE RIGHT, CAPTAIN MARVEL! Carol Danvers is back! Or is she? Devastated by her breakup with Rhodey, Carol doesn’t seem to be returning to her groove. Sure monsters are still getting hit, but things are missed too and boy, oh boy, is she grumpy. Before she can drive her completely crazy, Carol’s friends stage an intervention that looks darned like speed dating. Who needs enemies with friends like that ?! With beloved Captain Marvel veteran David López!
