Catalytic converters are still being stolen in Yuma County

April Hettinger of CBS 13 explains why this little piece of metal is worth thousands

YUMA, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – Thieves are still targeting catalytic converters for their precious metal, leaving vehicle owners a huge bill.

Removing a catalytic converter only takes a few minutes and the driver only notices it when he starts his car.

This has been a reported issue since March and is still ongoing.

Jeff McCloud, manager of Accurate Automotive Attention, says that because of its precious and valuable metals, the part can be taken to a recycling facility or sold for a profit.

“This includes precious metals like platinum, rhodium and cesium that actually have market values that could cost more than gold,” said McCloud.

Christina Fernandez from the Yuma Police Department says the detectives want to arrest those responsible.

“We currently have about 40 cases where our detectives are actively involved,” said Officer Fernandez.

It is actually illegal to drive without a car, but you will know immediately if you are a victim.

“If you start your car after your catalytic converter is stolen, it’s very noisy, it’s very alarming, and normally you wouldn’t drive this car in that condition,” said McCloud. “Usually they end up in our repair shop in a tow truck.”

All you have to do is park your vehicle outside.

“A thief who wants to steal catalysts can steal the catalyst they are looking for in just 25 or 30 seconds,” said McCloud.

This is why the police and auto mechanics recommend investing in a cover for your converter.

“It’s an open opportunity because it just goes, it solder, and it goes,” said Officer Fernandez. “So if you make it harder for the person, you can probably prevent yourself from becoming a victim.”

If you park your car outside of your home and don’t have a garage, a camera will help detectives find clues in this ongoing investigation.
