Child dies after being hit by vehicle while crossing freeway near Flagstaff

A child died Saturday after being hit by a car on Highway 180 near Flagstaff, according to the Department of Public Safety.

According to the department, the incident happened around 1:30 p.m. about three miles west of Flagstaff, near Milepost 222.

A car traveling eastbound on the freeway hit a child crossing the lane. The child suffered fatal injuries.

The Arizona Department of Transportation has advised motorists not to stop at the freeway shoulders to play in the snow, as it endangers motorists and pedestrians and can block freeway shoulders, which are used for emergencies.
