Clinical Phoenix shoots glory in AL

A clinical Wellington has taken two consecutive A-League victories for the first time in nearly 12 months with a 3-0 win over Perth Glory.

Reno Piscopo and David Ball goals in the first half and Ben Waine’s second goal in as many games in the second season sealed the Phoenix’s first win at his temporary Wollongong home of the season.

It is also the first time since March 15 last year that the Phoenix have won games in a row.

The Glory, who wanted to get back on their feet after losing 2-1 to Central Coast last Tuesday, will wonder how they got nothing out of a match they have dominated for a long time.

The guests had all the ball in the first 20 minutes when Irish striker Andy Keogh was just offside in the 18th minute.

Despite their dominance, Glory fell back in the 30th minute with the Phoenix’s first hit.

Piscopo picked up the ball in the center circle, drove to the edge of the box, and shot with his right foot in the opposite corner.

One-to-two only five minutes later when Daniel Stynes lost the ball and hit the back post from a precise cross from James McGarry.

Teenager Waine, who scored a goal in beating Newcastle last weekend, sealed the win early in the second half when he came home after a tackle in the 59th minute.

Glory’s day in front of goal was the epitome of Waine’s goal as Phoenix goalkeeper Oli Sail twice denied Bruno Fornaroli from close range and then stood up to distract Stynes’ tied attempt from the rebound.

The Phoenix will claim a third straight win when they face Western Sydney at Bankwest Stadium on March 15, while Perth faces the Mariners in Gosford in NSW next Sunday.
