Cougars drop a pair of heartbreakers at Yuma – The Burlington Record
The Burlington Cougars ditched a pair of leads in each double header game late Wednesday and dropped non-league competitions at Yuma 4-3 and 11-10.
The Cougars, who fell to 7-4, lost on the road for the first time this season. They got into the state’s top 10 in Class 2A this week, numbering 10.
Yuma (4-6) overcame a 3-2 deficit in the opening game with two runs at the end of the sixth inning. In the top of the inning, the Cougars scored two goals to take the lead.
In the night cap, Yuma overcame a 10-6 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the seventh.
In the opening game, Burlington pitcher Michael Gutierrez (5: 2) suffered the defeat, although he only gave up two hits. He walked two, hit a batter, and hit 12 for 74 strikeouts that season.
Gabriel Roybal hit a home run and ran in two while Garrett Richardson hit a double.
In the second game, the Cougars were reversed with eight mistakes. Starting pitcher Mikel Long went five innings and only gave up two earned runs on five hits while striking six and running two.
Gutierrez had two of the Cougars’ six hits in Game 2, including a double and RBI.
The Cougars are back in action on June 8 in a double header at home against Wray, who ranks fourth in the state in 2A. They end the regular season on June 10th at home against Rocky Ford.
