Delta variant becomes dominant variety in Arizona – Tucson, Arizona
Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) – The delta mutant is currently the predominant COVID-19 strain in Arizona, according to researchers.
Dr. Shad Marvasti is an Associate Professor at the University of Arizona School of Medicine (Phoenix) and the Director of Public Health and Prevention.
He notes that an increasing trend in delta variant cases is feared.
“People across the country need to be more conscious and more serious about Arizona and the Delta variants,” he told KGUN9.
Dr. Malbasti says the variant has doubled every two weeks in the United States for the past month. He says that’s not the only cause for concern.
“It’s about 225% more contagious than the original strain that came from Wuhan China, as you know. So we definitely have to worry. We have to worry. Reduction. We have to change the strategy, ”he added.
He says the best defense against delta mutations is vaccination to ensure the vast majority of people who die from COVID-19 are not vaccinated.
“We have an unvaccinated pandemic, but it also plays a vaccine role in spreading it,” added Dr. Marvasti added.
Vaccinated people also need to do their part by shrinking social circles and wearing masks in indoor public spaces, he says. The main reasons are: Vaccinated people can develop breakthrough infections.
“This means that even if you are fully vaccinated and have some immunity, the virus will break that immunity and still infect you,” he told KGUN9.
The Delta Plus variant is also available and, according to Dr. Malbasti as more contagious than the Delta variant.
“I’m still not sure if it’s any more deadly,” he added.
Vaccination is currently the best protection against COVID-19, he says, but we cannot guarantee its effectiveness in the event of mutations.
“In fact, the Delta variant of the vaccine is less effective than any previous variant,” he said.
Although Dr. Malbasti explains that wearing a mask is the best behavior, the CDC is following guidelines to prevent vaccinated people from wearing a mask.
