YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Department of Homeland Security, met with Yuma County officials, nonprofit organizations and the Yuma Sector Border Patrol Agency to understand the needs of our community as we continue to see large numbers of people Undocumented immigrants cross the border in our own backyard.

“We are building a humane, orderly and secure immigration system. We continue to enforce the law, both the accountability law and the humanitarian law. We do this not alone, but in a bilateral and multilateral relationship with other countries. We deal with irregular migration from the beginning to the end of the whole process, ensuring efficiency, order and humanity,” says Alejandro Mayorkas, Minister of Internal Security.

This is while hundreds of undocumented immigrants continue to enter Yuma County every day.

“As you know, we’ve seen some increases along the southwestern border over the last year and a half, so it’s important that we can get that information back to Washington DC and work on some of these issues,” said US Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz.

Secretary Mayorkas met with Yuma Sector Border Patrol Agents.

Some agents expressed that Yuma needs more help.

Sources mentioned that things got tense during the meeting with the agents, but neither side wanted to discuss the matter.

“One of my big priorities is going into the field, visiting the workforce, telling them what we are doing for them and most importantly hearing from the workforce about what we are doing, what we can still do and what they are experiencing and I have to say, here in Yuma, the dedication and talent of the men and women of the United States Border Patrol is extraordinary,” Mayorkas said.

In addition to the Yuma Sector’s agents working tirelessly around the clock, non-profit organizations are quickly running out of resources.

“One of the things that we’re very focused on with the nonprofit community is not just providing them with resources, but we’ve also built a whole architecture where they can deliver services and then we can reimburse them.” that they incur as a result of our FEMA program,” Mayorkas explains.

Secretary Mayorkas next travels to Texas to see how dire the situation is in El Paso and Loredo before returning to Washington to report his findings to the Biden administration.
