Downtown Phoenix based nonprofit moves to a new location.

This fall, Rosie’s House, A Music Academy for Children, officially welcomes a class of 550 students who’ll learn about leadership, discipline and teamwork while receiving music lessons, mentorship, meals and even loaned instruments.

It will be the first full year that the nonprofit is fully operational in a new 15,000-square-foot music and learning space near 9th Street and Jefferson Avenue that boasts a performance hall, cafe, computer center and lots of parking — the end result of a successful $6.5 million capital campaign.

“Rosie’s House exists not only to provide underserved youth access to music education, but to equip our students with life skills needed for academic achievement and success,” said communications manager Amber Johnson.

Students ages 5-18 can learn to play piano, guitar, brass and woodwind instruments. Vocal lessons and opportunities to perform are provided through the Core Choir and Mariachi Floreciente programs.

Rosie’s House was one of 16 Arizona nonprofits that received A Community Thrives grants in 2021. The group received $10,000 from the program sponsored by The Arizona Republic/azcentral.com and Gannett Foundation. Gannett Co., Inc., owns The Republic. Additionally, Rosie’s House received a $21,700 Community Thrives grant in 2020.

The funds helped provide free music lessons to students in it’s afterschool program.

“Support from Community Thrives helped Rosie’s House continue to be a second home for our families… where a culture of discipline, collaboration, service, inclusiveness, equity and connectedness to one another extends beyond our walls,” Johnson said.

This year, almost three dozen Arizona nonprofits applied for a Community Thrives grant. Final reviews are underway. Grants are expected to be awarded in this case. The 6-year-old initiative supports education, arts and culture, wellness and community building. In 2021, the program awarded almost $2.3 million to nonprofits nationwide.
