Emergency Loans Available In Phoenix As Eviction Moratorium Expires | Arizona News

PHOENIX, AZ (3TV / CBS 5) – When the pandemic hit hard last year, the federal government stepped in and imposed a moratorium on evictions. That is, if someone was behind on their rent, their landlord couldn’t kick them out if their hardship was related to COVID-19. But that should change. The eviction ban expires on July 31st.

The eviction moratorium expires on July 31st and puts Arizona tenants at risk

The city of Phoenix, which has received around $ 50 million in rental aid, has distributed more than $ 20 million. The process of obtaining these funds is not an easy one, but experts still urge you to file an application with the eviction moratorium expiring.

Around 2,000 applications are still pending for the Phoenix emergency aid program for rent. The average salary per household is $ 7,500. A large sum is now needed more than ever, as the eviction moratorium, which expires on Saturday, is in connection with a crisis in the Valley that experts have described as an affordable housing crisis.

“I think the next few months will be very difficult for many Arizonans and really crucial from a relief standpoint,” said Cynthia Zwick, executive director of Wildfire, an organization that focuses on poverty in Arizona. You have teamed up with Phoenix to distribute rental assistance. So far, they have distributed nearly 50% of the 50 million they received to nearly 3,000 households, officials said. Zwick admits that some were concerned about the funding, but she is happy with the progress made. “And I can tell you that our partners are spending the city of Phoenix as hard as possible, spending as much as possible, as quickly as possible,” said Zwick. But right now, thousands are waiting for help with pending applications. Zwick wouldn’t call it a backlog, but it just takes time to process all of the required documentation from tenants and landlords. “His documents are difficult, their authorization difficult and the time frame for these documents takes a while,” said Zwick.

Still, Zwick said, you should seek help with upcoming evictions and rising rental prices. For further information, click here.
