Flagstaff among American cities that are in danger of losing their Metropolitan Area designation

PHOENIX – Some lawmakers are trying to prevent 144 American cities from losing their “metropolitan” designation.

The federal government wants to raise the standard from at least 50,000 residents in the city center to at least 100,000 residents. Arizona Senator Mark Kelly (D) and South Dakota Republican John Thune tabled a Senate bill on Tuesday that would prevent the Bureau of Budget and Management from making the change.

Lawmakers said the downgrade would do real harm by preventing urban areas from receiving designated federal funding and making them less attractive to economic development.

Four Arizona cities would lose their designation as metropolitan areas, according to the Associated Press: Lake Havasu City, Prescott Valley-Prescott, Flagstaff, and Sierra Vista.
