New York in the ’90s: After Joanna left graduate school to pursue her dream of becoming a writer, she is hired as an assistant to Margaret, JD Salinger’s stoic and old-fashioned literary agent.
She vacillates between poverty and glamor and spends her days in a soft, wood-paneled office where dictation machines and typewriters still rule and agents fall asleep after three martini lunches.
Joanna’s main job is to handle Salinger’s extensive fan mail, but as she reads the heartbreaking letters from around the world, she hesitates to send the agency’s standard impersonal letter and impulsively begins to personalize the responses. The results are both humorous and moving as Joanna, using the great writer’s voice, begins to discover her own.
