The Flagstaff Eagles put on a show at the Walkup Skydome on Friday and rallied against the Mingus Marauders to win at 49:42 and expand their record to 3-0.

The Marauders began to shoot from all cylinders on all sides of the ball. At the start, Marauders senior running back Angelo Alvarez cut through the Eagles’ special teams and made it to the touchdown, his first of two that day. Alvarez was a threat against the Eagles, in addition to his two kickoff-return touchdowns, he added three more roaring touchdowns and 129 yards with just 14 tries.

“We’ve been preparing for him all week, the boy won’t go down,” said Eagles coach Sean Manning. “We developed a strategy to keep the ball away from him, but it didn’t work. The ball just has a natural tendency to go to him, it’s special.”

Their dominance in the first half didn’t stop there, with the Marauder’s defensive line choking the Eagles, forcing them to 3-and-outs on four of their first five drives. Coach Manning said the Marauders would have filled every offensive package they threw at them in the first half. Only when his coaching staff threw a “crease” in his offensive game plan did they finally get going.

Despite the early defeat, the Eagles managed to end halftime strongly with three touchdowns in the second quarter and reduce the lead to 35:21 at halftime.
