Flagstaff Story: Cartoonist James Swinnerton pays a visit to Flagstaff | Local

Mrs. Linda Scott, wife of the county sheriff, left for Phoenix on Friday morning. In her care was a woman who was recently pronounced insane by Probate Judge Farr. We are well on the way to asserting women’s rights when they begin to act as substitutes as peace commissioners. We believe, however, that the duties are better fulfilled in this case than if the deputy sheriff were of the stern sex, and that Mrs. Scott’s indictment will be passed on to the superintendent of the institution in the gracious manner that this charming lady does everything.

1921: George Dewey Carlos, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. ES Carlos, is killed by lightning at noon on Wednesday. The tragedy occurred some distance from the Carlos Branson Ranch in Flagstaff. George and a younger brother, Wilbur, cut wood. They had just finished lunch. George was standing with his ax over his shoulder near a cedar tree when lightning struck the tree, uprooting it, striking George on the right side of the head and the front of his body to the ground. Wilbur, who was about 15 meters away, was thrown to the ground but was not anesthetized. He ran to his brother, who only breathed twice after reaching him. The latter’s raincoat and shoes were torn.

James Swinnerton, the famous creator of the Little Jimmy cartoons, accompanied by Mrs. Swinnerton, arrived in Flagstaff on Wednesday with a group of four. During the Swinnerton’s stay on the coast, Flagstaff received much enviable publicity through a collection of pictures painted by Mr. Swinnerton depicting the landscape around Flagstaff. The exhibition was recently moved from the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles to the Hotel Maryland in Pasadena. The collection consists of paintings by notable western artists, but most of it was chosen from among the Swinnerton paintings, which he has every reason to be proud of.
