Former airline pays Phoenix to clean up fuel spills

A regional airline that went out of business last year will pay Phoenix to have fuel spilled.

In February 2019, Compass Airlines spilled 1,000 gallons of jet fuel due to a faulty valve at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

A city council report said the spill damaged airfield surfaces and contaminated underground floors. An airport spokesman told KJZZ that shortly after the city approved the airline’s clean-up plan, it had ceased operations.

Compass flew regional routes for Delta from Phoenix and American in other locations until last April.

Compass pays Phoenix $ 150,000 as part of a negotiated settlement.

A Sky Harbor spokesman said the fuel made contact with the binder on the pavement, and while there was no obvious evidence that the fuel had weakened the pavement, the airport is generally demanding that it be replaced.

The settlement will cover the costs of removing and replacing the pavement, sampling the soil and removing and replacing the soil if necessary.
