A former Flagstaff High School teacher was charged with a sex crime after allegedly sending inappropriate messages to a student and forging academic records.

Gregory Contreras, 25, a former FHS economics teacher, declined to appear before the Coconino Superior Court and confessed on Jan.

An investigation by the Flagstaff Police Department uncovered the alleged wrongdoing after the Contreras District reported to authorities. A student reportedly told FHS administrators that Contreras had sent them indecent messages through social media.

“The district has met its mandatory reporting requirements,” FUSD Superintendent Michael Penca said in an email. “This matter is now under the jurisdiction of other county or state authorities. Therefore, the Flagstaff Unified School District does not have to provide any additional information. “

Contreras volunteered all of its Arizona teaching certificates on April 21, according to an Arizona state education committee meeting in May.

Contreras admitted to a police investigator that he knew the student was under the age of 18, according to police records, when the inappropriate messages were broadcast. Contreras is also accused of forging grades and attendance lists after the student stopped showing up for class.
