Four dead and nine injured in a serious multi-vehicle accident in Phoenix

In a violent accident involving multiple vehicles in Phoenix, at least four people were killed and nine others injured, the authorities said on Wednesday.

The crash, in which a semi-trailer was hauling milk, occurred around 10 p.m. MT in the eastbound lanes of Loop 202 near Papago Park, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

Firefighters responding to the scene found the articulated truck was leaking milk and diesel fuel and a fire in one of the vehicles involved in the accident, according to Phoenix’s NBC subsidiary KPNX. Investigators said the truck was traveling east on the freeway, unable to slow down due to traffic jams in the 52nd and Van Buren Streets area, and hit seven vehicles.

The tank separated from the truck, crossed traffic, rolled over a concrete barrier, landed in the lanes heading west and caught fire, the state agency said.

Four people died on the scene and six others, including four men and two women, were taken to hospital in critical condition, according to the Phoenix Fire Department. Two other men and a 6 year old girl were stable.

The authorities did not immediately reveal the identity of the victims.

Investigators said there was no sign of impairment.

Both directions of loop 202 were temporarily switched off. While the lanes to the west have been released again, the lanes to the east are expected to be closed for the entire morning.
