Amok run, chase leads to the arrest of the boy
A seemingly trigger-happy person shot at an ONR train in Cochrane on July 20, 1971.
Twelve provincial police officers, some of whom were recalled, took part in the chase, which lasted almost an hour and a half. The chase ended with the arrest of a 17-year-old Cochrane boy on Highway 11 near The Scales.
A .22 rifle was recovered by the police.
Following a report that a boy shot the train, Constable RM Telford arrived at the scene and discovered a suspect on Seventh Avenue after walking through the King George Hotel.
Constable CW Shanks responded to Constable Telford’s call for help and the youth was chased to Lake Commando near the bandstand where he fired a shot at the windshield of Constable Teleford’s cruiser.
A piece of glass from his broken windshield pierced Constable Telford’s hat.
The hunt continued to the Northern Lites Motel while the boy ran through the bush. He was arrested and taken into custody at 10:30 pm.
A house full of colorful rocks is a feast for the eyes
To say that Olive Summers of Brower has “rocks on her mind” is a compliment to her. You can understand that when you chat with her and inspect the beautiful rocks in her house and garden.
By reading and speaking to other “rockhounds” since she started this hobby nine years ago, she has an enormous amount of knowledge about the rocks she collects – and others she dreams of finding.
Many of the brightly colored specimens were found in the countryside or by the lake on Olive and Bill Summers’ property or in the surrounding area. Only in the past two summers has she collected as far as Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and the Maritimes.
Mrs. Summers, who has read extensively about the hobby that is her passion, has also sent samples to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, where experts have verified her opinion.
One sample was a saltwater fossil from the Ordovician 350 million years ago, which she found in the freshwater lake at the bottom of her garden.
Another find confirmed by the experts was volcanic rock found within 15 miles of their home.

Holiday Bible School a complete success
“People don’t go to church – something is missing”, clergymen and laypeople alike have been moaning for some time, and the young people are of particular concern.
This was certainly not the case with the Cochrane Vacation Bible School. All youth aged five and over, regardless of church affiliation, were invited to attend the ten-day morning sessions at Ferguson Public School.
Although attendance fluctuated, most mornings saw up to 100 teenagers enjoying singing songs with lively melodies and attending a brief ecumenical service.
The two-week session ended with a party for parents and friends, who were entertained with music and plays the youth had learned in the Holiday Bible School and a demonstration of their craft.
