Hiker missing on Camelback Mountain found dead
PHOENIX – Authorities say a hiker who went missing while hiking Camelback Mountain has died.
The hiker, who was in her thirties, was found off the Echo Canyon Trail near a house on the northeast side of Camelback Mountain, according to a statement from Phoenix Fire officials. The woman was found unresponsive and pronounced dead.
Phoenix Fire officials said earlier members of the Technical Rescue Team were dispatched to Camelback Mountain around 1:00 p.m. after a hiker said his companion had not returned to the parking lot.
“The adult hiker is from out of town and overheated halfway down the Echo Canyon Trail,” part of the statement read. “According to the guide, we continued to the top of the mountain while she turned to return to the parking lot.”
Fire officials said when the hiker returned to the parking lot and his car, the female companion’s belongings were all in the car, but the woman was not there.
Over 30 rescuers were deployed to find the missing hiker, according to Phoenix Fire. The Phoenix Police Firebird helicopter was also deployed in the area.
Phoenix Fire Police say Phoenix Police will conduct a death investigation.
