Hikers injured, rescued from Mount Phoenix 24 hours later

PHOENIX (AP) – An injured hiker was rescued from a Phoenix Mountain after being unable to call for help for about 24 hours, authorities said.

The 34-year-old man, whose name is unknown, had to stay on the mountain overnight on Wednesday.

The man was hiking the Shaw Butte Trail and was about three-quarters of the way up the mountain when he sustained a lower leg injury.

The hiker said he was too injured to leave the area and had not been able to call for help since Wednesday noon.

He was discovered by a Phoenix police helicopter Thursday morning.

Rescue workers lifted him off the mountain because of the steep terrain and took him to a nearby hospital.
