I-17 Lane Restrictions New River to Flagstaff

As work continues on Interstate 17 north of Phoenix for fiber-optic cable installation and the Interstate 17 Improvement Project between Anthem Way and Sunset Point, motorists should expect several intermittent lane closures in the week ahead, beginning Sunday, March 20.

The Arizona Department of Transportation urges motorists to slow down, be prepared to merge into the open lane and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while the following restrictions are in place:

New River to Black Canyon City

The following nightly left lane closures are scheduled from 7 pm to 6 am beginning Sunday, March 20, and continuing until the morning of Friday, March 25:

Northbound I-17

Sunday, March 20:

  • Northbound I-17 near Moore’s Gulch Bridge will be narrowed to one lane (between mileposts 239 and 242) just south of Black Canyon City.

Tuesday, March 22:

  • Northbound I-17 at the New River Bridge will be narrowed to one lane (near exit 232).
  • Northbound I-17 near Moore’s Gulch Bridge will be narrowed to one lane (between mileposts 239 and 242) just south of Black Canyon City.

Wednesday, March 23:

  • Northbound I-17 at Moore’s Gulch Bridge will be narrowed to one lane (milepost 239).

Thursday, March 24:

  • Northbound I-17 at Moore’s Gulch Bridge will be narrowed to one lane (milepost 239).
  • Northbound I-17 at Black Canyon City/Rock Springs will be narrowed to one lane (exit 242).

Southbound I-17

Monday, March 21 and Tuesday, March 22:

Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane, (between mileposts 233 and 235), just south of Table Mesa Road (exit 236).

Additionally, watch for intermittent “rolling” right lane closures on southbound I-17 overnight from
7 pm to 6 am Monday, March 21, through Thursday, March 24, from Sunset Point to Table Mesa Road. A large truck with flashing lights will be moving down the highway, testing pavement at approximately 800 locations.

Expect lane restrictions on Bumble Bee and New River roads where work is underway for bridge-widening design. Westbound Bumble Bee Road will be controlled by a flagger between 7 am and 11 am daily from Sunday, March 20, through Wednesday, March 23, and traffic on westbound New River Road will be temporarily shifted to utilize the existing left turn lanes under I- 17 on Sunday, March 20, from 7 am to 5 pm

Southbound I-17 (I-40 to Schnebly Hill Rd)

Sunday, March 20, to Friday, March 25:

  • Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane in 2-mile increments south of the junction with I-40 (mileposts 340-336) overnights from 9 pm to 6 am

Southbound I-17 (Cornville Rd to Coldwater Canyon Rd)

Wednesday, March 23, to Friday, March 25:

  • Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane near Cornville Road (milepost 293) overnights from 7 pm to 6 am

Monday, March 21, and Tuesday, March 22:

  • Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane near Ash Creek Bridge (milepost 269) from 7 am to 4 pm

Wednesday, March 23, and Thursday, March 24:

  • Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane near the Agua Fria Bridge (milepost 266) from 7 am to 4 pm

Sunday, March 20, to Tuesday, March 22:

  • Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane near Coldwater Canyon Road (milepost 245) overnights from 7 pm to 6 am

A vehicle width limit of 14 feet will be in place.

Northbound I-17:

Sunday, March 20, to Friday, March 25:

  • Northbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane with the shoulder closed from Bumble Bee Road to Sunset Point (mileposts 247-252) overnights from 7 pm to 6 am
