Independent reallocation commission holds public hearing in Yuma. away
YUMA, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – Tonight, share your thoughts on the redesign of the new Arizona county lines. The Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) wants to hear from you.
This process takes place every ten years. It consists of redrawing the lines of US Congress and law as the population continues to change across the state. Based on the latest census data, each district should have around 300,000 residents.
Local officials believe it is beneficial for the public to get involved as they are the ones who make up each district.
“To listen to people from anyone, you know, not an elected official, you know, not someone running a big company, but they want to talk to people in communities to talk about what they value,” explained Rep. Charlene Fernandez from District 4.
“You have to look at them where the boundaries are growing and that kind of split them up so they have competitive districts. [some districts] Lean on the Democratic side and so many districts, lean on the Republicans, “said District 13 Rep. Tim Dunn.
Representatives say a large part of Yuma County is located in the state’s second largest district, comprising four counties.
The hearing is also a good time to learn about the five members who are making these important decisions. The IRC wants to make its decision by December.
