Everyone is waiting for news of new signings. So far, the New York Islanders have not officially announced anything. And while all of this is by design, it’s a bit much to deal with for Islanders fans while almost every other NHL has made some sort of signing in preparation for 2021-22.

The islands have a number of loose ends to connect, perhaps the biggest being the signing of their three major RFAs: Adam Pelech, Anthony Beauvillier and Ilya Sorokin. It is impossible to extract information from Lou Lamoriello’s cone of silence, but in a recent conversation with the Russian outlet Sport Express, Ilya Sorokin spoke about his negotiations with the club.

New York Islanders Ilya Sorokin on contract talks

I suggest you read the entire chat between Ilya Sorokin and Alexey Shevchenko. It’s a long talk from his early fights on the net, the KHL, how much he likes Long Island, and even how expensive his rent was last year.

The biggest advantage for me was the chat about his contract. Shevchenko was direct when he asked Sorokin what were the main points in the discussion between the club and the RFAs. Sorokin was confident that there weren’t any and that everything would be taken care of in the “next few weeks”.

Sorokin even rejects any attempt to use the return to the KHL as a negotiating tactic. He stays and both he and the islanders know that.

Both sides seem to be on the same page and only have to iron out a few “uncritical” points.

I’m sure no Islander fan was really worried that things were going bad between Lou and her RFA goalkeeper, but if you were, you can be sure. Everything is going well between the islands and Sorokin. The deal will be finalized (maybe soon) and he won’t be returning to Russia to force Lou to give him what he wants.
