Letter: Subject: May 5th Article, “Tucson City Council Votes To Expand Reid Park Zoo Northwest” | Local affairs
While Tucson City Council is trying to appease various constituencies, including the Reid Park Zoological Society, with a hybrid Option D / Option G extension, the simple fact remains that the best option is to forego the extension altogether and yourself to choose to have a better zoo rather than a bigger one. The refinement of the zoo’s offerings within existing boundaries not only corresponds to the voter-approved intention of the bond issue, but also promises to make the effort more efficient. In contrast, any expansion includes the certainty of an increase in operating costs without any guarantee that the Society’s forecast increases in participation income will be sufficient to cover that additional burden on Tucson taxpayers.
