Letter: Tucson remembers 9/11 | Letters to the editor

On September 11th, I was working at a federal government facility about 40 miles from the Pentagon. When the first plane hit the twin towers, the news quickly spread throughout the building. Since I had a TV in my office to monitor the congress on C-SPAN, colleagues gathered in my office and we huddled around the TV and watched live as the second plane hit the towers and the towers collapsed. After the Pentagon was hit, it became clear that the government was also a target and we were ordered to evacuate our facility.

Planes were on the ground and travel outside the country was effectively banned after the attacks. America was isolated for several months. When travel was allowed again, my wife and I took a group trip to Spain. When the group arrived at our hotel in Madrid, the hotel staff were visibly delighted with our arrival. They informed us that we were the first American tourists to visit the hotel since 9/11.
