Letter: Tucson Water | Local affairs

Tucson Water (TW) is a leader in water conservation, management and storage. TW does not provide “subsidized water” for new developments. The water tariffs are set annually with the involvement of the citizens, approved by the mayor and the council and applied equally in different categories. Customers inside and outside the COT limits are charged the same prices. The imposition of higher water tariffs on water customers who live outside of the city is taxation without representation. County customers get higher water rates but no vote in city elections. Tucson Water customers pay into the City General Fund annually through the water tariffs. Additionally, COT still holds $ 8 million from Air Force payments to the city for water purification costs that water customers have paid for years in their water tariffs. District customers accounted for 36% of the cost and all customers should expect a reimbursement. The city council is discussing charging an additional 10 to 30% fee to water customers in the district. The real reason for these discussions may be to pressurize the county’s residents and businesses to join the COT.
