Maricopa County Expands Rental Assistance Program

PHOENIX, AZ – Maricopa County residents who have financial problems may be eligible for rental and utility assistance.

Maricopa County Human Resources Department announced Monday that it will expand its emergency rentals assistance program to include those hardest hit by the pandemic.

The program is open to a limited number of people and offers up to 15 months of financial support in the form of rent payments or assistance with electricity, gas, water, sewage and garbage fees.

The district’s Emergency Relief Program is aimed at residents most financially in need, including those living at or below 50 percent of the median income in the region, and households with members who have been unemployed for 90 days at the time of application and lived at or below 80 Percent of median income, said the district.

The program also includes utility and rental payments for past due, owed, and future rental and utility payments.

Eligibility is limited to those who live in Maricopa County but do not reside in Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, or Phoenix.

Additionally, recipients must have at least one household member who qualifies for Arizona unemployment insurance or is having financial difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other qualified recipients are residents with a proven risk of homelessness or housing insecurity, the district said.
