Martin Luther King III is expected to visit Phoenix this weekend

Martin Luther King Jr.’s eldest son is expected to march through downtown Phoenix on Saturday to raise awareness for the right to vote.

PHOENIX – Martin Luther King III, the late civil rights leader’s eldest son, is due to visit Phoenix this weekend to urge senators to dispose of the filibuster to pass a voting bill.

Deliver for Voting Rights, an organization campaigning for the Freedom to Vote Act, announced Tuesday that it is organizing a march and rally in Eastlake Park on Saturday morning.

According to a press release, King will attend a pre-March rally at the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church before marching in Phoenix Park for a post-March lecture program.

The purpose of Saturday’s events is to “call on President Biden and the Senate to urgently pass federal voting rights” and ensure that no filibuster interferes in the legislative process, a press release said.

Arizona Senators, Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly, both Democrats, made no pledge to change filibuster rules to pass the voting reforms by simple majority. The existing rules require a majority of 60 votes for the law to pass the Senate.

King is the second child of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. He was 10 years old when his father was murdered in 1968.
