Marvel may have just unveiled its new phoenix on a cover of the Heroes Reborn variant
Marvel has revealed a number of April variant covers that the publisher says will set the stage for the Heroes Reborn 2021 event, which starts in May – but the Carlos Pacheco-drawn covers that reflect the status of Quos prominent Avengers in depicting the world of Heroes Reborn 2021, where The Avengers That Never Formed may have revealed a much bigger spoiler for a recent Marvel story.

One of the variants – the cover for Daredevil # 29 – shows Echo in a straitjacket in what appears to be an institution. As with all variants, the picture is provided with a title that offers an insight into the fate of the character Heroes Reborn 2021, in this case “The Lost Prisoner”.
Interestingly, Marvel’s previous May 19 application for Heroes Reborn # 3 states that “the Phoenix” is the “newest inmate” at the infamous Ravencroft Asylum. And also, the cover of Avengers # 44, the finale of ‘Enter the Phoenix,’ which revolves around the Phoenix Force hosting a tournament to find its new host, shows an apparently female figure who is a remarkable figure in silhouette The new Phoenix host bears a resemblance to Echo.
When putting these pieces together, did Marvel accidentally reveal who will own the Phoenix Force?

Avengers writer Jason Aaron previously told Newsarama that anyone who becomes the new host in Phoenix will have a new status quo for some time.
“The idea is that it’s going to be an ongoing thing – it’s not just a bow and done,” Aaron told Newsarama before ‘Enter the Phoenix’ began. “If we get out of this arc, we will have a new status quo for the phoenix and for the character who will be the host.”
There are some wrinkles in the theory that Echo will be the new Phoenix host. For one thing, she lost her fight against Namor in Avengers # 42 and was presumably excluded from the tournament. But since the phoenix apparently offered to skip the tournament entirely and give Thor his power, we bet the rules of the tournament aren’t that important to a cosmic unit.
Echo could also be another Ravencroft inmate being held there next to the Phoenix – perhaps a way for the Phoenix Force to escape custody.
We’ll find out when Enter the Phoenix ends in Avengers # 44 on April 7th.
In the meantime, all six April titles for Heroes Reborn variants are planned here (one of which features Black Panther in Echoes of Ronin’s old identity … hmm), along with their release dates:
- Thor # 14 (April 7th)

- Guardians of the Galaxy # 13 (April 14)
- Avengers # 45 (April 21)
- Black Panther # 25 (April 28)
- Black Widow # 6 (April 28)
And of course here is a gallery of all six variants.
