The Phoenix were beaten 4-0 by Melbourne City in Melbourne on Sunday night after falling 3-0 at halftime.

It took the hosts almost half an hour to break the impasse, but scored two more goals late in the first half almost ending Wellington’s hopes for the second point of the first season.

For Phoenix head coach Gemma Lewis, it was a hard-to-take result.

“I think we played more positively today which is a shame to still get away with a four to zero loss,” Lewis told the media after the game.

“I think we mostly had a little bit more to ourselves. We were a bit more relentless, with no possession, we flipped the second ball, we hit them in the face, we tried to be positive, we were ‘when we were ours When we got full-backs to do it, we tried to get attack numbers into the box.

“I was happy with our performance in the first half, but being three to zero at half time is so difficult to get out of.

“I felt we had a good first half, but then we made that mistake and conceded a soft second goal and then conceded from a corner just before half-time,” said Lewis.

“We just have to really work to stop those soft goals because that really changed the game, to be honest.

“I felt like we had really good moments in the first half when we put pressure on. Of course we are still struggling with this offensive threat, but I felt we had more offensive options.”

Lewis only made the one forced move that led to their 5-0 loss to Sydney FC on December 30th. Talitha Kramer replaced the injured Saskia Vosper on left defense.

The Phoenix return to Wollongong next Sunday for their seventh round match against the Brisbane Roar.
