Merino Lady Rams wins 41:39 against Yuma – Sterling Journal-Advocate for second place in a row

After starting 0-3, the Merino Lady Rams have begun to resemble last year’s playoff team.

Makenna Sutter scored 17 points to lead Merino to a narrow 41:39 win over the Yuma Lady Indians on Thursday night. It was the Lady Rams’ second win in a row after defeating Fleming on Tuesday. Merino is now 2-3 in the season.

It wasn’t easy as the two teams fought non-stop, including the first quarter when Merino lost between 13 and 12 in the end. The Lady Rams knew they were still at it, however, and took control in the second quarter when they beat Yuma 12-8 during that time. Merino led into the locker room at halftime 24-21.

Things stayed tight as it was a defensive battle in the third quarter with Yuma beating the Lady Rams 6-5. Merino led 29-27 in the final quarter of the game. It was an even match in game four as the two teams tied each other with 12 points apiece. That’s all it took Merino to take a well-deserved victory.

Sutter, a newcomer, was very impressive that evening. Not only was she the only Lady Rams in the double digits, but she also contributed 6 rebounds and the only blocked shot for the team. Of course, no Lady Ram win would be complete without another dominant performance from Junior Taysa Conger. The stud player scored 8 points, got a team with 14 rebounds, and had a steal.

Senior Ryann Briggs scored 7 points, 5 of which were from the free throw line, where she had excellent results this year. Briggs also contributed 5 rebounds and 1 assist. Grace Wernsman (4 points, 3 rebounds), Faith Trenkle (3 points, 6 rebounds) and Lily Ryles (2 points, 4 rebounds) also came out big for the Lady Rams.

Unfortunately, Merino’s victories did not extend to the boys’ team. After an impressive win against Fleming on Tuesday, the Rams suffered a 73:54 loss to Yuma on Thursday. No point summaries or individual statistics were available for this game.

Both the boys ‘and the girls’ teams will be back in action in Haxtun on Friday.
