PHOENIX – The monsoon season will have its first notable presence on Metro Phoenix this week.

Wind, dust and a little rain are already the order of the day on Monday evening and could last until the 4th of July public holiday on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Wind and dust will pose a greater threat to Valley residents, NWS forecaster Mark O’Malley told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.

Storms will gradually occur near the lower desert communities this week. This means an increased likelihood of strong winds and blown dust. While there is only ~ 20% spotty dust left today, there is a greater than 50% chance by Tuesday evening for areas with very gusty winds and dust. #azwx pic.twitter.com/eIijqwv1h5

“If you live in Phoenix, don’t expect major floods this week,” said O’Malley. “It’s still early monsoons so there may be a few people who get good rain, but probably most people will be disappointed.”

The gusts of wind could hit 30 mph on Monday and 35 mph on Tuesday before weakening later in the week.

O’Malley said parts of the valley could get up to a quarter of an inch of rain by the end of the week, but a tenth of an inch is more likely.

According to the NWS, the probability of rain will remain between 30% and 50% until Sunday.

“We’re seeing a gradual increase in monsoon activity during the week,” said O’Malley.

The rain should lower temperatures all week.

Monday’s high is expected to hit 109 degrees before dropping to 105 on Tuesday and 102 on Wednesday.

Mercury should stay at 102 degrees on Thursday before forecasts call for a slight increase to 103 on Friday, 104 on Saturday and 105 on Sunday.
