News 11 Meteorological Agency: Severe weather at Yuma

Local forecast

August 11, 2021

YUMA, Arizona, (KYMA, KECY) – After a very active night with extensive showers and thunderstorms through much of the desert in the southwest, some of our areas got a little encore for Wednesday.

The strong cell development in southern Yuma County prompted the National Weather Service to issue a severe thunderstorm warning in the San Luis and Somerton area this afternoon.

We also received a couple of flood warnings from the same strong storm pile.

A flash flood warning near the Yuma area that expired at 5:00 p.m. and a flash flood warning in the Somerton and San Luis areas due to expire at 7:00 p.m.

These areas have been hit by heavy rains close to 1 to 2 inches.

Although the current monsoon thunderstorm pattern is expected to shift north for Thursday, there is still a slim chance that isolated thunderstorm activity will occur within the next 24 hours.
