NJCAA Softball Championships in Yuma this week

The Division I National Junior College Athletic Association softball championship is held this week in Yuma and the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex. It’s a great time for local businesses, especially downtown Yuma and the Yuma Palms Regional Center.

The event began on Sunday with a welcome barbecue and home run derby won by Zoe Bisby of Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Bisby had 14 home runs in the final round and 44 in three rounds.

16 teams from across the country will be in attendance as the games begin on Tuesday lunchtime at the PAAC.

Tim Slack is the Sports Information Director and Associate Athletic Director for the Arizona Western Matadors.

“To bring the best 16 softball teams from two-year colleges across the country to Yuma and the kind of softball community that Arizona Westerns have supported and loves softball for so long, we are thrilled to bring this event,” said Slack.
