Packer and Insurance Company are offering tenants of Sherman Phoenix tenancy relief
Half a dozen businesses at the Sherman Phoenix Entrepreneurship Center in Milwaukee will receive six months of rent relief thanks to Green Bay Packers and American Family Insurance.
Oren Burks, a Packers linebacker, broke news of the $ 40,000 donation to pay rent for six companies during a video call taped and posted by the Packers on Monday.
“We’re really grateful for all the work you guys are doing in the community and just wanted to show our gratitude and appreciation for what you do every day,” Burks said in the video.
The COVID-19 pandemic has hit businesses hard, and the recent spate of cases related to the Omicron variant has sparked further disruption.
“It’s like putting everything into this business to me,” said TrueMan McGee, owner of Funky Fresh Spring Rolls, in the Packers video. “This is my life’s work so far.”
Representatives from The Underground Makers Market, Hello Beautiful, and Salon Lavish also spoke about the video.
“We pride ourselves on having a space that definitely makes you feel a little lighter, a little better, and hopefully more elevated as you walk in,” said Pamela McCreary of The Underground Makers Market.
The rent relief project is American Family Insurance’s second donation to Sherman Phoenix. In November, the Madison-based company announced that it would be providing $ 100,000 to Sherman Phoenix through its Urban Future Centers for three years, aimed at providing technology education and other resources to the people of downtown Milwaukee.
Three other Milwaukee locations selected as Urban Future Centers – Journey House, Milky Way Tech Hub, and Young Enterprising Society – received the same financial support as Sherman Phoenix.
