Pflag Yuma resumes face-to-face meetings in time for Pride Month
YUMA, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – Pflag Yuma resumed in-person support group meetings this month for the first time since the pandemic began. It is the first and only organization for the LGBTQIA + community in Yuma, providing support and other resources for LGBTQ + youth and their families.
Erica Hernandez, President of Pflag Yuma, knows firsthand how much support a person on the LGBTQ + spectrum needs, not just as a person on the LGBTQ spectrum herself, but also as the mother of a transgender child.
“Although it was our family who needed the support, we saw the need for everyone else too. They were kids that were here in Yuma, they were kids in the kids’ camp who just needed some help or guidance or guidance, “said Hernandez.
The group meets every third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Spiritual Life Center on S Second Avenue in Yuma. It is a temporary location with the hope of building a designated LGBTQ + resource center in the future.
“We’re still waiting for our approval for a 501c3 application, and that’s still a work in progress – but it’s a work in progress, and that’s exciting. We still have a long way to go, we still have to build a board and find leaders willing to help the LGBTQ community in any way we can. ”
The organization held its first in-person support group meeting last Wednesday, but there is still an option to attend virtually. The link to the Zoom meeting changes every month to ensure that the gathering is a safe place for attendees.
The 85350 Bar & Pizzaria in Somerton is hosting a Pride event on Saturday, June 26th at 5pm, with tickets priced at $ 10. Several drag performers will be hosting a show along with other art exhibitions and vendors. Here you can buy tickets for the event.
