Phoenix area hit by monsoon-like storm; Thousands without electricity

Tens of thousands of customers in the Phoenix area were without power on Friday night due to a monsoon storm.

Rain and winds of up to 70 miles per hour began shaking the East Valley around 10 p.m. local time, leaving about 30,000 customers without power, according to Phoenix’s KPHO-TV.

Wind and dust reduced visibility in central Phoenix to about a mile, according to the station.

According to FOX 10 in Phoenix, power to the Salt River Project should be restored by 3 a.m.

The National Weather Service issued several severe thunderstorm, dust storm and flash flood warnings overnight, some of which expired by Saturday morning.

The thunderstorms began to advance over southwest Arizona early Saturday morning, with the strongest storms moving through Yuma County, according to the weather service.

The NWS said the main threats would be gusty wind, dust and lightning.
