Phoenix, Arizona, Shootout: At least one person is dead and a dozen injured after 8 shootings in the West Valley area

Nine other people were injured by shrapnel and debris, Sgt. Brandon Sheffert of the Peoria Police Department said at a news conference.

“We have a total of eight incidents so far,” he said.

Police stopped the suspect in Surprise after his vehicle was discovered by a firefighter, Sheffert said.

The filming locations are in Glendale, Peoria and Surprise – just three cities northwest of Phoenix in a region known as the West Valley. The shootings spanned more than an hour, Sheffert said.

The sergeant said a firefighter spotted the suspect’s vehicle. The alleged shooter did not resist the arrest, the police said, and a weapon was said to have been found in his vehicle.

Aerial footage by CNN subsidiary KPHO / KTVK showed a white SUV with the doors open, which the news channel identified as the suspect’s vehicle.

Officials said they don’t believe there was more than one rifleman. “There is no reason for the public to feel unsafe right now,” said Sgt. Tommy Hale said.

The FBI is backing the investigation.

Banner Health officials said three of their hospitals have admitted nine patients. Two were in the Boswell banner, three patients were in the Thunderbird banner, and four were in the Del Webb banner.

It is not known if the patients had gunshot wounds or other injuries.

Banner Health officials said they could not provide additional information about the patients, citing privacy laws.

Peoria is about 14 km east of Surprise, about 45 minutes from downtown Phoenix. Glendale runs south and east of the two cities.
