Phoenix Captures Four Event Titles at JDL DMR Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Elon University women’s track and field team collected four first-place finishes along with several personal records as the Phoenix competed at the JDL DMR Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 19, inside the JDL Fast Track.

Alyssa Sandy took gold in the 60-meter hurdles after clocking the second-fastest time in school history at 8.65. Piper Jons won the 400-meter dash as the sophomore clocked a time of 57.26, a new indoor personal-best. Aliya Barrows was the runner-up with a time of 57.88.

Hannah Miller ran a new personal record time of 4:57.35 in the one-mile run, coming in second overall in the race. She also qualifies for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships.

In the 60-meters, Megahn Wilcox finished third overall with her time of 7.71 after coming eighth as the last qualifier in the prelims. Wilcox followed up with a time of 25.69 in the 200 meters, finishing fourth overall.

Madison George was third in the pole vault with her cleared height of 3.75m. Blythe Hehmeyer earned a spot in the top five of the event with her cleared height of 3.30m. Jessica Anderson also matched Hehmeyer at the same height, but needed more attempts to clear.

In the long jump, Alex Tudor was second overall with a leap of 5.35m with Alexa Mark third at 5.17m.

Elon’s 4×400-meter relay team of Milly Heinbaugh, Anna Kozlova, Hollie Thurgood and Lauren Willingham took first in the event with the quartet racing a time of 4:15.78.

In the throws, Kaitlin McGoogan won the weight throw with her mark of 17.84m to lead three Phoenix finishers in the top-five. Lauryn Carlton was second with a toss of 17.69m while Kristine Strazdite was fifth at 15.28m. Carlton was also the runner-up in the shot put at his throw of 13.41m.

McGoogan, Carlton and Strazdite also competed in the weight throw at the Virginia Tech Challenge on Friday, Feb. 18 prior to the JDL DMR Invite. McGoogan was seventh overall with her mark of 18.46m while Carlton set a new personal-best mark of 17.91m in ninth. Strazdite was 17th at her throw of 15.33m.

The Phoenix will travel to Boston for the 2022 ECAC Indoor Championships. The three-day meet runs from March 4-6 and will be held at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center.
