Phoenix Children’s will build a new clinic in Avondale

Phoenix Children’s will soon begin work on a freestanding emergency room and specialty clinic in Avondale, Arizona that will provide West Valley families with access to world-class emergency pediatric care and expanded specialty services that are now closer to home.

The opening of the Southwest Campus is part of a larger strategic effort by Phoenix Children’s to expand access to care for families in the West Valley and across the state. The Southwest Campus will be built on the grounds of Phoenix Children’s Southwest Valley Specialty and Urgent Care Center at 1665 N. Avondale Blvd. Construction is scheduled to start in spring 2021. Phoenix Children’s expects all aspects of the new location to open by spring 2023.

“The expansion of this West Valley location is part of a diverse plan to directly serve the communities of the families that Phoenix Children’s serves,” said Robert L. Meyer, President and CEO of Phoenix Children’s. “This website will not only expand specialty care, it will also address the urgent need for emergency care for children.”

Since opening the Southwest Valley Specialty and Emergency Center, Phoenix Children’s has seen an increase in patients who have critical or complex needs and require advanced care. In fact, there are more than 30,000 pediatric emergency visits in the Avondale area each year, but no pediatric emergency care option. With the population of the West Valley expected to grow twice as fast as inland over the next five years, the demand for child health services will continue to grow.

“Phoenix Children’s has been part of the Avondale community for more than a decade, serving the Southwest Valley. The facility served as a catalyst for the successful Avondale Healthcare Corridor and is a pillar of Avondale, ”said Ken Chapa, director of economic development for the city of Avondale. “As the population of the area continues to grow, we are excited about Phoenix Children’s plans to meet the growing demand for pediatric care in our community and have an economic impact of nearly $ 450 million over the next decade . “

“Children with serious or life-threatening illnesses or injuries do much better in a pediatric emergency room than in an adult emergency room,” said Dr. Jared Muenzer, chief physician at Phoenix Children’s. “This website will be staffed with emergency pediatric medicine specialists who have the training and expertise to care for the most critical patients. I have worked in the children’s emergency room in Phoenix for years and cannot stress enough the importance of having pediatric professionals trained and ready by the time this care center opens. “

Phoenix Children’s will invest $ 33.5 million to build and equip a new three-story 71,250 square meter medical office building and upgrade the existing 35,000 square meter building to provide emergency services. The Southwest Campus will expand Phoenix Children’s emergency care to emergency care. The new emergency room offers 24/7 emergency care. Access to doctors in more than 75 pediatric specialties; 40 rooms with triage, treatment and resuscitation rooms; six fast-track beds with rapid turnover; Ultrasound, CT, fluoroscopy and digital radiography. Nearly 130 Phoenix Children’s employees are expected to work at the Southwest Campus site, half of whom are new positions.

It is also noteworthy that the clinic will expand its pediatric psychology and psychiatry services to meet growing demand in the greater Phoenix area.

Phoenix Children’s Multi-Specialty Clinic, located next to the Emergency Department on Southwest Campus, will expand its services in a variety of high-demand areas including cardiology, developmental pediatrics, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general surgery, plastic surgery, genetics and nephrology, neurology, neuropsychology, Neurosurgery, orthopedics and hand, pulmonology, rheumatology, rehab therapy, neonatology, fetal development, allergy, dermatology and urology. The clinic will also have more than double the number of patient rooms, from 27 today to 68 when the new location opens.

“We have additional plans in store that will make a real difference to West Valley families,” added Meyer. “Our most important task is to provide children in our community with the right care at the right time and in the right place.”

Phoenix Children’s plans to offer additional specialty services on the Southwest Campus in the coming years. Indeed, the design of the website will accommodate future developments, including inpatient care, as the community grows. The healthcare system does not expect any disruption to emergency or special services during the construction of the Southwest Campus.
